Unit converter
Gigabytes to gibibytes.
Convert GB to GiB and GiB to GB. Type in either box and the other follows. This is the conversion behind the missing space: a 1 TB drive is honestly 1000 GB, but an operating system counting in binary shows 931 GiB.
| GB | GiB |
|---|---|
| 1 GB | 0.931323 GiB |
| 2 GB | 1.86265 GiB |
| 4 GB | 3.72529 GiB |
| 8 GB | 7.45058 GiB |
| 16 GB | 14.9012 GiB |
| 32 GB | 29.8023 GiB |
| 64 GB | 59.6046 GiB |
| 128 GB | 119.209 GiB |
| 256 GB | 238.419 GiB |
| 512 GB | 476.837 GiB |
| 1000 GB | 931.323 GiB |
- Conversion goes through B in both directions, so neither figure is rounded on the way.
Definitions
- The gigabyte is a thousand million bytes. Storage is sold in gigabytes; Windows reports the same space in gibibytes, which is why a drive looks smaller than the box.
- The gibibyte is 1024³ bytes — the binary unit macOS and Windows actually count in, about 7.4% larger than a gigabyte.
- This conversion is exact by definition. 1 GB = 0.9313225746 GiB.
- Decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB) are powers of 1000; binary prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1024. Drive makers use decimal; operating systems often report binary, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB.
How it works
One direction multiplies and the other divides by the same number, so nothing is lost by going back and forth.
The value passes through B, the unit every other digital storage unit on the site is defined against, rather than a number written into this page on its own. That is why the figure here, the figure in the table above and the general digital storage converter always agree.
Display precision limits significant figures rather than decimal places, because one fixed number of decimals is useless across a range this wide. Very large and very small results switch to scientific notation with a proper superscript exponent. The editable box always holds a plain number at full working precision, so you can carry on from either side.
Common questions this answers: how many gibibytes in a gigabyte (1000 mb) (0.931323), how many gigabytes in a gibibyte (1024 mib) (1.07374), and what 1000 GB is in gibibytes (931.323 GiB).
