Length and distance.
Convert cm to inches, feet to metres, miles to kilometres, mm to inches and twenty other units of length. Type in either box and the other follows. Every imperial unit here is defined exactly in metres, so nothing is approximated on the way through.

Definitions
- The inch, foot, yard and mile are the international units fixed by the 1959 yard and pound agreement: the yard is exactly 0.9144 m, and everything else follows from it. These conversions are exact by definition.
- The US survey foot, very slightly longer, was retired at the end of 2022 and is not offered here. If you are reading an old US land survey, the difference is about 2 parts per million — 3 mm over a kilometre.
- The nautical mile is exactly 1852 m, defined for navigation rather than derived from the yard. A knot is one nautical mile per hour.
- The astronomical unit (exactly 149 597 870 700 m) and the light-year (exactly 9 460 730 472 580 800 m) are defined constants. The parsec follows from the au and the definition of the arcsecond, so it is the one length here that is not a round defined number.
- The menus include ft + in, which keeps the whole feet whole and puts the remainder in inches — so 175 cm reads as 5 ft 8.9 in rather than 5.74 ft.
- Length is otherwise converted, not rounded to a "nice" imperial fraction: 30 cm reads as 11.811 in, not 11¾ in. Fractional-inch display is a separate job.
How it works
To convert cm to inches, divide by 2.54. To convert inches to cm, multiply by 2.54. To convert feet to metres, multiply by 0.3048; for metres to feet, divide by the same number. Miles to kilometres is a multiplication by 1.609344, and the reverse is a division — the familiar "multiply by 1.6" is that number rounded.
Every unit on this page is stored as its size in metres, and a conversion is one multiplication into metres followed by one division out. That is why an unusual pairing — furlongs to fathoms, ångströms to thou — is no less accurate than a common one, and why adding a new unit affects only that unit.
The display precision menu sets a maximum number of significant figures; trailing zeroes are trimmed, so 1 m reads as 100 cm rather than 100.000 cm. Very large and very small results switch to scientific notation with a proper superscript exponent — a light-year in millimetres is shown as 9.46073×10¹⁸ mm, not as a wall of digits.
Common questions this answers: how many cm in an inch (2.54), how many inches in a foot (12), how many feet in a metre (3.28084), what 5 foot 9 is in cm (175.26 cm), and how many km in a mile (1.609344).
