Megabits per second to megabytes per second.

Convert Mbit/s to MB/s and MB/s to Mbit/s. Type in either box and the other follows. Broadband is sold in megabits and downloads are measured in megabytes. Divide by eight: a 100 Mbit/s line gives about 12.5 MB/s.

Definitions

  • Megabits per second is how broadband is sold. It counts bits, so it is eight times smaller than the download figure your browser shows.
  • Megabytes per second is how download managers report progress. A 100 Mbit/s line tops out at about 12.5 MB/s.
  • This conversion is exact by definition. 1 Mbit/s = 0.125 MB/s.
  • Broadband speeds are sold in bits per second; file sizes are measured in bytes. One byte is eight bits, so confusing MB/s with Mbit/s creates an eightfold error.

How it works

One direction multiplies and the other divides by the same number, so nothing is lost by going back and forth.

The value passes through bit/s, the unit every other data transfer rate unit on the site is defined against, rather than a number written into this page on its own. That is why the figure here, the figure in the table above and the general data transfer rate converter always agree.

Display precision limits significant figures rather than decimal places, because one fixed number of decimals is useless across a range this wide. Very large and very small results switch to scientific notation with a proper superscript exponent. The editable box always holds a plain number at full working precision, so you can carry on from either side.

Common questions this answers: how many megabytes per second in a megabit per second (0.125), how many megabits per second in a megabyte per second (8), and what 100 Mbit/s is in megabytes per second (12.5 MB/s).
