Definitions
- Metric horsepower (PS, or cheval vapeur) is 735.498 75 W — about 1.4% smaller than mechanical horsepower, which is why the same car has two figures.
- Mechanical horsepower is 745.6999 W, defined as 550 foot-pounds per second. It is the horsepower UK and US brochures quote.
- This conversion is exact by definition. 1 PS = 0.9863200706 hp.
- Power is converted through W.
How it works
One direction multiplies and the other divides by the same number, so nothing is lost by going back and forth.
The value passes through W, the unit every other power unit on the site is defined against, rather than a number written into this page on its own. That is why the figure here, the figure in the table above and the general power converter always agree.
Display precision limits significant figures rather than decimal places, because one fixed number of decimals is useless across a range this wide.
