Assumptions
- Constant (uniform) acceleration throughout — the five equations don't hold if a changes.
- Motion in a straight line. Pick one direction as positive and keep every quantity's sign consistent (a decelerating object has a negative a, a downward throw a negative u, and so on).
- When time comes from a quadratic (e.g. a projectile passing a height twice), the first — smallest non-negative — solution is shown.
- SI units throughout: metres, metres per second, m/s², seconds.
How it works
Each of the five equations links four of the five quantities, leaving one out. Give any three and there is always a pair of equations that pins down the other two — the calculator picks them for you, so you don't have to remember which equation to reach for.
Signs carry the physics: keep a single positive direction and let velocities and accelerations be negative when they point the other way. Results use up to three significant figures by default (adjustable above), without padding with trailing zeroes; the two the calculator worked out are highlighted.
