Assumptions

  • Force is perpendicular to the stated area and distributed uniformly.
  • Liquid pressure is gauge pressure above the free surface, not total absolute pressure.
  • The liquid is stationary, incompressible and has uniform density.
  • Gravitational field strength is uniform, and h is vertical depth below the surface.

How it works

Pressure measures force per unit area. The same force creates more pressure when it acts over a smaller area.

In a liquid, each layer supports the liquid above it. Gauge pressure therefore increases with density, gravitational field strength and vertical depth according to ρgh.
